Synopsis:
Robbins is one of the best-selling medical textbooks of all time. Through 6 editions, it has become the one text that almost all medical students purchase. It is also widely used by practicing pathologists and physicians and has a strong worldwide market. The textbook started by Stanley Robbins presented a brand new approach to pathology, bringing a much stronger component of pathophysiology to a subject that had traditionally been taught with a wholly morphological approach. Ramzi Cotran put his own stamp on the text, giving it a more authoritative feel and bringing in a number of top experts as contributors. The basic science component of the text had been beefed up with greater emphasis on molecular and cell biology. Dr. Cotran died recently and we have added two new editors to the editorship of this text. Vinay Kumar, who has been one of the main editors on the text, as well as on his Basic Pathology text has assumed the lead editorial role. We have added two additional editors - Abul Abbas (author of our Immunology texts and the Chairman of Pathology at UCSF) and Nelson Fausto (Chairman of Pathology at U. of Washington in Seattle). Abbas has demonstrated his abilities as an author of student textbooks and brings an expertise in immunology as well as general pathology. Nelson Fausto is a leading kidney pathologist and an all around general pathologist. In honor of Ramzi Cotran's contributions to the book, we have renamed the text Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease. Over the last two editions, the text underwent very extensive revisions to add color, improve the line diagrams, and bring the book totally up to date. Reviews and comments from the market on the book indicate that there are no major weaknesses that need to be addressed. Our major competitor, Rubin and Farber, is a very distant second and there are really no other serious competitors in the market. The first two chapters (Cell Injury and Cell Death; Adaptat
