Synopsis:
Every day the safety and well-being of some children across the nation are threatened by child abuse and neglect. U. S. Department of Health and Human Services statistics indicate that more than 12 out of every 1,000 children were victims of abuse or neglect. To prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect effectively, there needs to be a common understanding of the definitions of those actions and omissions that constitute child maltreatment. Intervening effectively in the lives of these children and their families is not the sole responsibility of any single agency or professional group, but rather is a shared community concern. Child Abuse Sourcebook offers information about the various forms of child abuse, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect, as well as less common forms of abuse such as Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP). A discussion of the physical, mental, and emotional effects of child abuse offers information about shaken baby syndrome, battered child syndrome, and the long-term effects of child abuse, which can continue into adulthood. Controversial issues related to child abuse, including withholding medical care, corporal punishment, and child maltreatment in youth sports are discussed. A section providing information about child protective services contains information about foster care, adoption, and other abuse prevention efforts. A glossary of related terms and resources for further help and information are also provided.
