Synopsis:
Is it enough to teach your CNAs the technical details of how to make a bed or perform personal care? This book goes beyond the technical skills to teach what it really means to care for another person -- it teaches not just the "how," but the "why." The philosophy of "mindful caregiving" is woven into every chapter. Mindful caregiving means never letting routine tasks become automatic -- paying attention to details, being observant, and looking at situations openly, leading to a better quality of care and a better quality of life. The new 4th edition textbook adds subacute care to the existing long term care curriculum. We have added three completely new chapters: * Specialty Skills for Subacute Environments (deals with diabetes, oxygen therapy, hot and cold applications, dialysis, and alternative nutrition) * Care of the Person Having Surgery (common fears, before surgery, after surgery) * Special Skills for Special Times (prenatal care, labor and delivery, care of the mother after birth, neonatal care, working with children, growth and development, and promoting health from infancy into young adulthood) New material has also been added to two other chapters: "Other Work Environments and Resident Populations" now includes subacute care units and "Gathering Information" now includes helping with the physical exam and history. Each chapter begins with an opening that explains why the material is necessary for CNAs, including applications of OBRA 87. Chapter introductions challenge students to put themselves in the place of the residents, emphasizing that a CNA must think of the residents first. Short case studies and critical thinking exercises are found throughout the book. Nursing skills are described step by step with accompanying illustrations for ease of learning. Each chapter ends with a summary of the main points, a case study that shows how the chapter material can be used in daily care, and a 10-question multiple choice quiz.
