Inexpensive high-throughput sequencing has allowed for the complete characterization of microorganisms inhabiting the most diverse environmental niches, including agricultural- and food-related niches. This approach is generally referred to as metagenomics and its application to solving agricultural issues will dramatically change the way we produce our food and ensure its safety.
