Synopsis:
Tremendous advances have been achieved during the past two decades in the development of technology for beneficial organisms, such as insect predators and parasitoids, mite predators, entomopathogenic nematodes, fungi, bacteria and viruses. Despite the globally growing research and interest in biological control, commercialization of those technologies is still in progress. As we become aware of the negative impact of pesticides in human health and on the environment, interest is rapidly increasing on developing biological alternatives to pest control. However, developing techniques to mass produce these biological control agents is not enough if the cost of commercialization is prohibitive. There is an imperative need to push the development of mass production to the level of economic feasibility so these new technologies can compete in the open market. This is an essential reference and teaching tool for those producing "natural enemies" in biological control, as well as those researching the state of the art on beneficial arthropod mass production and future technologies in development.
