Synopsis:
This fourth edition is a dynamic presentation of the latest writings regarding the techniques for approaching selected muscles and continues to detail methods of intramuscular electrode placement for the hand, forearm, arm, shoulder girdle, foot, leg, thigh, pelvis, and hip joint. A brief description and diagram are presented for each muscle. Each muscle is also covered with respect to segmental or peripheral innervation, origin, and insertion; position of patient or limb; point of electrode insertion; test maneuver to insure proper location of electrodes; and possible sources of error. A cross-section diagram is included to almost all individual muscles in the limbs and trunk in order to orient the reader in placing electrodes. Thoroughly updated, this new edition examines the muscles innervated by cranial nerves, muscles of the perineal region, the paraspinal muscles, muscles of the abdominal wall, and intercostal and diaphragm muscles. A substantial amount of kinesiological information has been added in the Comments section of each muscle. Knowing the functional way in which each muscle acts will help the electromyographer to analyze and better understand the electromyographic findings. The technique for the insertion of the electrode has been described in greater detail in order to avoid common pitfalls in the phase of this procedure. The technique described for the study of the diaphragm is based on the experience of Dr. P. Saadeh, who described the technique in 1993.
